My gold buying has never been very well timed, though I have what is for me quite a substantial position tied to gold in various ways. I must admit that over the past ten years I never expected that Greenspan would do what he did and I am quite astonished at what Bernanke has done, especially most recently. Bernanke's "daring and resourceful action," as I am sure someone has called it, seems to me the economic equivalent of invading Russia. It's more extreme than what the U. S. government did in the middle of the Civil War--where the survival of the union was at stake. This time it has been the survival of Bear Stearns that was at stake. Those who support him say that the entire financial system was at stake. I think that if that's true, the entire financial system should undergo an orderly liquidation.
