Well, I've done the cheaper stuff and I'm always hunting for the best bargain. I just find the cheaper stuff tends to have harsher flavours. I wonder on those taste tests that the amount of wine in the test tends to be a small amount. One can't develop the full sense of the wine without going through a full glass of it. I drink about 1-2 bottles of wine a week.
