In the space program, we were doing something that had never been done before, but in that something that we didn't have, it was developed from what we already had. We went from small rockets to bigger rockets. We went from large electronics to smaller electronics. Nothing was created that didn't already exist.

A viable alternative automobile fuel is one that does not exist today and "tweaking" anything we currently have will not be the solution.

With global warming causing the rising ocean levels, what better way to solve both problems than to build nukes and convert seawater into hydrogen and oxygen? lol

I'll never believe we have the economies of scale to make biofuels work. Our climate is probably one of the largest issues.

We went to the moon, how about using the same motivation to create the technology to access oil at depths unreachable today?

The "we're running out of oil, so we need to stop using the oil we have" argument is ludicrous. The sooner it becomes a reality that we are running out of oil, THAT will be the motivation necessary to move mountains. Not some politicians trying to out maneuver each other in donations from special interest groups.
