Mr. Picker,

Go have a look at the Cymer thread, or the SemiEquip "Blood" thread for exhaustive analyses of the opportunities for excimer lasers in Fabs.

COHR has a long way to go to catch up to Cymer, but they are right to try. It's a tough call we can't make whether their German engineers will pull it off. The world will demand a second source however.

More worrisome to me is the transition from ion lasers to solid-state. This has been going on for several years now and is certain to erode a profit center of COHR, much like IBM lost its mainframe cash cow in short order. The company's strategy is to purchase the Tampere group and make their own diode pumped SS lasers, but they are having trouble shipping Verdi, either because they can't supply themselves the diodes or the crystals. If DPSS sales don't ramp up beyond the loss in gas laser sales, this stock will be a dog for some time to come.

Who can tell me what percent of COHR's present sales come from mature gas laser technologies?
