He also did better than expected Feb 5, and then won a string of 11 or so races. In January he also won enough that John Edwards dropped out. moveon may have backed Edwards, so when he dropped out, they picked Obama.

It doesn't necessarily follow that moveon spent money on Obama's campaign (although I think they helped in some way in Nevada) or that they mailed or emailed to their members to ask them to do anything.

A fulltime volunteer is a founder of FaceBook, so the database and communications is very social networking, which helped to build the ground teams for state by state organizations. Clinton was old tech or no tech, and Obama was "high" tech in a software kind of way.

Obama had vision from the start and a key decision was spending $2 million in 2007 (don't know when) for the software that became the engine for online solicitation, collecting, and reporting contributions.
