Is Cisco Interested in EMC?
by: Word on the Street posted on: May 20, 2008

Once again, EMC Corp. (EMC) has become one of most active stocks on the New York Stock Exchange. Barron’s had a piece out this weekend that might explain the recent upswing in trading.

The story quoted Paul Wick, manager of the Seligman Communications and Information Fund as saying that Cisco Systems Inc. (CSCO) could go after EMC. He emphasized it would be no small undertaking as EMC has a current market cap of 37.42 billion and any takeover would involve a decent-sized premium that would inflate the cost of a deal, but noted that at the end of the March quarter, Cisco did have $24 billion in cash on the balance sheet.

It does make some strategic sense as EMC’s position as a leader in enterprise storage and its 85% stake in VMware (VMW) would be particularly desirable. Cisco is certainly no stranger as it invested $150 million in VMware before the virtualization company went public. EMC was up 3.3% in heavy early Monday morning volume. These comments are definitely fanning the flames of some recent market rumors and should support another round of fresh buying intra-day.
