I expect production costs to go up over time

When you look at history, the opposite is what is happening. Oil, adjusted for inflation, is where it was in 1980. Same with the rest of the commodities. Labor's percentage of production cost is constantly dropping. The Greenies are doing their best, but still can't raise costs because production moves elsewhere when they interfere.
