During the Civil War, the western gold fields were populated with veterans and draft dodgers from both sides.

IN 1863 a large gold strike was discovered in Alder Gulch. The miners voted to name the town Varina after Jefferson Davis's wife. There was violence in the streets between equally divided factions. A judge crossed out the name in the announcement to the territorial governor and wrote in Virginia City in its place, and it's been known by that name ever since. I guess he thought the name would appease both sides.

Are you familiar with The Gallant Pelham? He would have been awarded the Confederate equivalent of the Medal of Honor if he had been on the winning side.
