The conventional wisdom that I've heard is that Michelle Obama is fair game but it is not necessarily smart politics to take potshots at her. The smartest politicos will probably let others do it for them and disavow any connection. Obama's retort was pretty savvy. Strong defense of one's wife always gets good marks. I was disappointed that McCain did not deck the guy who used the C word in connection with his wife. In another time, he would have challenged the jerk to a duel. If I were Obama, I would tell Michelle to take her cues from Cindy McCain. If I were Cindy, I would tell John to take his cues from Barack. McCain probably developed a fierce ability to control his emotions in the POW camp where the wrong response could be dangerous or fatal. He's not in that camp now, so all bets are off.
