Top-Five James Stewart Flicks
LIBERTAS

In honor off the Mighty Man's 100th birthday:

1. It's A Wonderful Life (1946) — Yes, an all-too obvious choice, but for good reason.
2. Winchester '73 (1950) — George Bailey, no more.
3. Bend of the River (1952) — Tough, gritty little revenger.
4. Destry Rides Again (1939) — Stewart's most appealing performance, and one of the funniest movies ever made.
5. Call Northside 777 (1948)

Bend of the River and Winchester '73 are two of eight films Stewart made with director Anthony Mann, six of them terrific westerns. Stewart's post-WWII persona — tougher, more dangerous, a little self-serving — made for some of the most interesting psychological westerns of the era.
