So at the margin the ethanol subsidies do cause people to do activities that don't make economic sense without the subsidies.

I understand that. What I was addressing was the notion that the subsidies, themselves, produce income (which probably wasn't Bob's intent but it read that way). Kind of like my encouraging my aunts, who don't earn enough to pay taxes, to file federal this year to get the rebate. Maybe I should encourage them to file for ethanol subsidies, too. <g>
