I'm not a fan of the electoral college system because I think it's one of the sources of our failure to address a host of infrastructure problems in big cities, including public education, including higher education. As for the primary system, there is definitely much that can be done. But it's very unlikely to happen for the same reasons that we are unlikely to change the electoral college. Too many powerful actors with too much at stake in the present system. It will take, unfortunately, some sort of disaster for that to happen.
