I am interested in WHY the democrat party structured such a primary system as we now find ourselves embroiled in.

I think there are only two differences between the Dem and the Rep primary system: superdelegates and proportional state counts. I'm not certain why or when the Dems moved to proportional representation.

As for the superdelegate system, that came in the 80s. The concept was fairly decent but, after this primary season, one can see that any attempt to actually activate it, would seriously impair the party.
