To the extent the article's statement about Nixon and Buchanan is true its about a tactic they used, but a split was already in existence before they implemented the tactic and before the memo was written. A tactic to take advantage of, or even to enlarge the split, isn't the split itself. That's not the way I read it. It seemed to say that they planned for a particular coalition for their side, the enlargement you spoke of, and developed contrasting characterizations to color the opposing groups. Are you suggesting that that set of contrasting characterizations (which would be the focus of the demonization) was in play before hand and they just aggregated and stressed them?
