Though the split itself is a larger matter, the article is about the specific political dialectic created by Nixon and Buchanan. The fact that it has endured so long is quite amazing, really. And I think the author is correct that it may be coming to an end now.

I think the phrase "Silent Majority" was a stroke of genius. So much is implied in the combining of those two words.
