From what I've read, most of the governments of the 48 developing countries are subsidizing fuel prices for their citizens. That is going keep world oil prices going up because oil demand from these countries will stay relatively the same. China and India are two of them doing this.

Since most of these countries are poor, like India, if the government allows the fuel prices to be be felt by their people, there will be riots, internal economic and political disruption and high death rates from weather exposure.

So, whatever amounts of oil we can save through conservation and alternative efforts will be gobbled up overseas. The free markets can't fight the economic power of these governments as long as they can afford to subsidize their oil.

We have to open up all our domestic oil reserves, switch more to natural gas for energy production and vehicle fuel and gasify our vast coal reserves.
