I lived thru it and i was a JFK fan. Even at the time we knew K-man had eaten JFKs lunch. And JFK knew it. It all led to the Cuban Missile Crisis in which luck more than anything else averted a nuke exchange. You have no idea how close it got and how much fear there was. Didnt feel that sense of forboding again until i was standing in the rubble of the WTC.
Back to JFK who i still love. K-mans biggest criticism was that he was both too intelligent and too weak. This is the exact charge mccain levels against obama. If you are too intelligent you may think that you are smart enough to avoid use of force and thus too weak. Antithesis of bush who is dumb and postures like a bully. Both extremes are very bad.
So it becomes obamas task to dispel this notion before he is elected. If he cant, he shouldnt be elected. And part of dispelling it is to admit he misspoke when he said he would meet with ahamadidajad without preconditions. JFK would have done well to know meet with K-man. And knowing what i know now and knowing how close we came to nuke war, i would have held my nose and voted for Nixon in 1960. Nixon went to russia as veep and upbraided krushchev.. Kman would not have acted with Nixon as he did with kennedy. Obama needs to learn from the mistakes of folks like him who are too smart and too weak. TR might be a good role model here.
