Pluto was "stripped of its status" as a planet, because it turns out that it is one of a very large number of icy objects out beyond the orbit of Neptune, and at least one of those objects is larger than Pluto. If Pluto had stayed officially a planet, we might have dozens of planets instead of 8. The "planet" to "dwarf planet" is somewhat arbitrary, and its not the only such unclear or arbitrary boundary.
