RE "If you are too intelligent you may think that you are smart enough to avoid use of force and thus too weak. Antithesis of bush who is dumb and postures like a bully. Both extremes are very bad."

Its quite the balancing act isnt it? One more thing on JFK. What got his admin off to a horrific start was the Bay of Pigs. There in order to prove his strength he went along with the militarys crackpot plan. So when Krush met him for the first time, he already had a major bone to pick with JFK. Perhaps more than Vienna, that intitial screw up in at the bay of pigs almost led to a nuke exchange.
So for OBAMA if he becomes president, dont be weak and dont be full of the notion that ones intelligence can somehow reverse the norms of international politics, but also dont try to prove your manhood either without a foolproof plan.

In my scenario above for FP, of course mccain becomes nixon in relation to iran. And the fear the mullahs probably have of mccain is a reason to vote for him, not against him. Nixon would never have done bay of pigs or fallen into vienna trap so thus no CMC. But of course the CMC led to the hotline and probably saved the world from some future catalclysm based on mutual errors. All the possiblities when studying history are amazing.
