Headline: Dell CEO Doesn't See Company Soon Selling PCs Under $1,000

======================================================================
NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- Dell Computer Corp. Chairman and Chief
Executive Michael Dell said he believes in theory that his company could
make money in the under-$1,000 personal-computer market, but it's not
something he's interested in.
"We'd much rather sell workstations and servers," Dell said at The
Wall Street Journal Technology Summit. "It may be 40% of the (overall)
market, but it's zero percent of ours."
Dell said most of the buyers of the personal computers that cost
under $1,000 tend to be inexperienced, first-time users. Dell Computer
(DELL), a direct marketer of personal computers, serves a more
knowledgeable audience.
Dell Computer's consumer sector however is growing at a rate of seven
to eight times the overall consumer market, but the Austin, Texas-based
company continues to sell predominantly to business users, according to
Dell. He added the consumer sector is contributing nicely to profits.
He said Dell Computer's sales are growing at three to four times the
overall computer market, which is increasing at a rate in the range of
15% to 20%.
