The issue isn't the official language. Greek was the language and culture of the whole region - Greece itself, Macedonia, western Anatolia and much of Syria, Palestine, and Egypt.

BS. The Roman Empire was a whole different culture from the Greek one. Because they spoke both Latin and Greek doesn't mean the culture was Greek. Greece was a part of the Eastern Roman Empire and would have had influence but the original culture was long dead.
