It is unclear that the US and Iran even after the revolution had to wind up as enemies. Our support for the Shah at the end, even after the revelations regarding the secret police were made public had something to do with it as well. But regardless, we got what we go---a paranoid, religous extreme state on the borders of two nations we are at war in. It is not inevitable that iran/stalin cant later become iran/krush or even iran/gorby. There ideology unlike al quaeda doesnt require them to go primitive or not to deal with non-muslim folks. But all you can come up with is the caliphate and conflating all muslim extremism in one basket in order to satisfy your very simple mind.
