Thanks, but what are the trade-offs? Diesel is supposed to be a more efficient fuel than gasoline, but does the refinery consume more energy when it's converted to make a higher percentage of diesel? I'm trying to get a handle on the net benefits across the whole system.

The advantage of diesel vs. gasoline may fade away if HCCI (Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition) engines are widely adopted. These gasoline engines operate more like diesel engines.

Given the current trend in fuel prices, the internal combustion engine is doomed. I figure we'll see Peak ICE in about 15 years.
