As you so very-well suggested, "contract" employees typically means "as needed" and it's impossible to make a comparison. Most businesses use "contract" employees because it is less expensive and/or because the work is not regular enough to have someone on the job full time, doing the particular job. As the business grows, economies of scale kick in and it makes sense to bite the bullet with full time employees, and attendant benefits (health, transportation, worker's comp, paid vacations, etc.) IRS rules also apply as to when an employee must be a W-2 employee as opposed to being issued a 1099 as an outside contractor.

Lots of wasted time here exchanging electrons with someone who basically wants to MGB.

Te be objective, a metric of revenue per employee is not useful at this point in the business cycle. If one could get information as to revenue per 40-hours, that might be useful. (Some work in every business is low end and some is more skilled. So this argument is really not that useful for evaluating the business' potential.) As for the big picture, it's not all that useful. The denominator of 5 is not useful, nor is the denominator of 30. It is obvious, to all but those with an agenda, that the correct number would be somewhere in between and that we don't have anything useful to discuss. That won't stop having an endless discussion about non-useful minutiae.

Of course, perhaps the next MGB issue will involve the gardners who do Dexter's lawn. First there will be an investigation as to whether or not all employees have green cards. Failing that, perhaps Creede's gardners can be attacked or Milo's. Fortunately, I raise my own tulips as I organically destroy the hidden pests lurking beneath the surface.

Back to MGB zone.
