The point I was trying to make was that future medical costs probably are not a significant factor when choosing to adopt a healthy life style.

If you know that your medical care will be covered by the government, you don't need to think about the financial implications of your behavior at all.

If this were the case, countries with universal health coverage would have a higher rate of lifestyle related disease than those countries who have a fraction of their population without health coverage.
