"Which predictions? You really ought to read the entire Wiki article:"

I did.

At the time that the book was written, the Green Revolution was just getting off the ground. There was no way to predict that, but it fundamentally changed the ground rules. Which is why we have reached a situation where famine is more of a political instability thing.

But, while we have gotten out of one box, we have only done so by climbing in yet another. There are only a few varieties of most crops that are being grown any more. So, you run the risk of diseases wiping out the bulk of your food production until new varieties can be introduced. This is currently occurring with bananas. Banana wilt is becoming such a problem that the Cavendish variety, which is the overwhelming variety used, worl wide, may go extinct. Fortunately, it has been spreading slowly enough that there won't be more than local disruption.
