The "global warming" term was introduced because the average temperature would have a long-term upwards trend. But the average temperature isn't very damaging.

The problem is, that the "global warming" is much more about changes. After stabilizing the world's geology and chemistry, life could come into existence. As fundamental life stabilizes, bigger organisms form. As these stabilize, even bigger organisms form etc. Every time there is a place with a stable environment, life specializes for that place.

Now, we have been pumping CO2 and other chemicals into the environment for a long time, pushing to the equilibrium. The short term effects (<1 year) are easiest to recognize - if you put out too much pollution into your local environment, plants and people will die. The medium term effects (1-100 years) are more difficult - but it seems that we are getting more knowledge on how CO2 problems are making the oceans sour, change wind directions, change some region's temperatures a lot in up- or downwards direction, etc. The long term effects are much more difficult (100-10000 years). What does the invention of agriculture mean to planet earth? Is it the reason why we don't have an ice age right now? Will all the CO2 that we have emitted, pop out of the oceans again? Will increased CO2 levels make new life forms replace the plants we know? We have no idea.

But one thing is sure: The current amount of weather change and hurricanes in USA is just a small problem compared to what we will see in 20 years. And people who actually think that buying a Prius is helping the environment, don't understand much.
