You've got cause and effect mixed up there. People with severe debilitating diseases lose weight and then die extremely thin. Being thin didn't make them die. It's dying (which can be a very slow process) that made them thin. Think cancer.

That what skews the statistics. Take out those who are dying with severe eventually fatal diseases, and the statistics will change completely.

It is better not to be overweight.
