For me, that's part of the appeal of Sci-Fi, imagining different futures. I am skeptical humans will ever break free of the solar system, interstellar distances being what they are. But the sociological and biological possibilities are fairly broad, just here on Earth. Just consider what we've done with genetics in the last 20 years. Hell, they'll probably someday have horses that will carry you 50 miles a day, then cook dinner for you (a vegan meal, no doubt :)

Connie Willis writes about some interesting future possibilities, some not that far away. 'The Last of the Winnebagos' for example.
