Alex, I love your phrase, "the European idiom", but am a little unclear about what vastly superior methods of insulation would be used to achieve near silence and peace in a building housing a rock and roll band.

I assume we don't usually build to this standard because it is too expensive. Am I correct?

If I ever raise a million I want to be as far from "civilization" as I possibly can be and still rent videos and straggle to the grocery store once in awhile. But I think in the northern California economy, certainly your idea has merit!!!
