I watched Laura Ingram fill in for Bill O'Rielly the other day and she was complaining something like "Gore Democrats" were trying to impinge upon American liberty by dissing SUV use.

Thats such a dumb POV. I realize Americans have always been known for driving big vehicles. To an extent you can associate that with the "American way of life".

However forget about the greenhouse gas arguments that have become popular these last 10 years or so.

A bigger issue is American power. The Dollar is the reserve currency of the world and that has given us tremendous economic advantages and power. Very worrisome is the percentage of the current account deficit that is purely based on buying foreign oil now - and its getting bigger. The dollar index has gone from 120 to 70 in a few years mostly due to the 60 billion $ a month current account deficit. As oil goes even higher that deficit could unbelievably get even bigger. The higher cost of oil is screwing fixing the deficit and I'm beginning to wonder if the likes of Hugo Chavez and Amininajad aren't trying to make it worse on purpose.

Some pretty smart people say the collapse of the dollar completely is just a matter of time. That would be an event that would hurt us way more than some guy running around the middle east with a rocket launcher and rag on his head ever could.

It might be the truly patriotic thing to do would be to trade that SUV in for gas miserly vehicle.
