It is again a hypothetical extrapolation. There remain many unanswered questions such as a single mutation in multiple cells or multiple mutations etc. If one believes in jumps in evolution each species and its life cycle is a self-contained continuum and it's hard to claim the egg came first solely because it's smaller - it's got to have come from somewhere. If one doesn't believe in jumps in evolution, the two proto-chickens that were the source are so close to the final chicken, one could claim they came first and the lines blur again. But the closer we get to the crux of this issue and so many others, scientific tools fail. A great example is the Big Bang- when we get to planck time from the Big Bang all the laws of physics fail -why? Or the phenomenon of interference with a single photon, and so it goes...
