GI Bill demagoguery

The bill pushed by the two antiwar Senators is serve one term, then we'll pay you to go to college if you leave the service. The idea is to discourage re-enlistment. An alternative pushed by Sen Lindsey Graham would allow transfer of college benefits to spouses and children.

The NY Times Editorial on the GI Bill is typical of the unfair treatment the paper gives the President. The Bill the Times support is put forward by two anti war Senators who want to use the bill to discourage reenlistments and make it more difficult to retain a force to fight our wars. They have tried similar ploys in the past to do a back door defeat by restricting deployment schedules.

What is really sick is that they and supports like the Times denigrate the opposition to the bill as somehow not supporting the troops. This is a sick and absurd charge. The alternative bill is probably more generous and it rewards troops who stay in the service longer with more benefits which are transferable to family members. What that means is that a spouse or the kids of the veteran would also benefit from his service and sacrifice.

To suggest that supporters of the alternative bill do not support the troops is deeply dishonest and is typical of Times position on the war.

Also in the editorial, it is clear that the Editorial Board does not read it own paper when it comes to the war. The progress Iraq and the US are making in defeating al Qaeda and the Iranian back groups is beyond that papers wildest dreams. Perhaps it is their nightmare scenario, we are winning.
