I have mixed feeling about this. 99.9% of the time I edit something, within a few minutes, because of a grammatical error or typo [sometimes my keyboard does not type everything when it's on the verge of needing new batteries]. As an example, today I quickly edited something that should have started off, "I'm," and not, "I." Spell checks do not pick-up all kinds of errors.
For major content editing, how about if edited messages get flagged in a way that readers know if they want to read the edited posting or not. There could be an edit flag to the right of a person's name when looking at the list of thread postings. The correct flag to place would have to be selected by the poster when submitting the edited posting.
Today, mine could show in the thread listing as [I had to remove the subject words that show--too long here]:

Here, the, "S," could cover spelling, typos, grammatical errors, punctuation. 99,9% of people would not bother reading it again.
"C" Might alert people to a content change.
"N" Not just an edit, but actually a totally different posting.
