"No, you assume our security forces are stupid and ineffectual so if terrorists fail to kill Americans, its because they weren't really trying."

I have never stated such a thing.

I do claim that the terrorists aren't stupid, something that is key to your case.

Let's see. We expend a lot of resources and can't reach our goal with the first method. We spend few resources and are much more successful with the second. That means we need to abandon the second approach and try the first even harder!

This makes sense to you?

"You want to assume they aren't really that dangerous."

Making stuff up again, Brumar.

Granted, that is the neo way, but you should watch it. It leads to bad decisions.

"No, I think I'm having to point out the obvious to someone who doesn't seem to realize it."

I realize it, Brumar. Just like I realize that not all terrorists are a pack of morons.

"They did want us to attack Afghanistan"

Yes, they did. As it turns out, it was easier than many thought. But, hindsight is 20/20.

"They figured the attack would be like the Soviet attack and they would defeat us"

Not just the Soviets. Afghanistan has a long history of defeating invaders.

Which is why it was smart of Clinton to try to figure out another way. Doing what you opponent wants you to do is rarely the key to success.

Sun Tzu had several things to say on that subject.
