Tonite, I was watching Sean Hannity at the gym. He had Buchanan on......and they were talking about appeasement. Wow! What a surprise! In any case, Buchanan fancies himself a historian......and a somewhat honest one at that. And of course, all Hannity wants to do is turn Obama into The Appeaser for the 21st century. So they were talking about the Munich Agreement. Buchanan is getting that he has to hang Chamberlain who has become a proxy for Obama. However, to hang Chamberlain the way the right likes to hang him, you have to ignore some of the facts.....like the fact that Brit. was a paper tiger in 1938 and couldn't have stopped Hitler if Chamberlain's life depended on it. In any case, ole Pat is smart enough to know that he has to call Chamberlain an appeaser but then turns around and says that Chamberlain was a jerk for giving Poland a war guarantee that it could not honor........all but admitting what we know about the state of Britain's military at the time.....and suggesting that Chamberlain really didn't have much choice but at least to try and placate Hitler. In any case, that was enough to get Hannity on a rant about Chamberlain throwing in Obama's name from time to time. Then he started to go on about how Churchill was the greatest statesman that ever lived and if it hadn't been for him, we would all be speaking German now. Meanwhile, ole Pat was on a roll over appeasement and apparently couldn't stop himself when he turned around and accused FDR and Churchill of appeasement over their giving Stalin most of Eastern Europe.....just as Hannity was puffed up about all things Churchill. Naturally, Hannity brought that segment to an end real fast. <g>

However, the whole conversation got me thinking.......it suddenly dawned on me that Churchill/Britain were playing a real bad game of Russian Roulette with Germany in 1939 and 1940. Their ace in the hole....in fact, their only ace was the US coming into the war. Had we not gotten into the war, the Brits would have been screwed......big time. I am not sure I like a statesman who rolls the dice in that way.
