Bob, who wants a nuclear weapon for offensive purposes? And, having answered that, what would be their goal in using such a weapon against us? If you suggest some nation wants to use a nuclear weapon against us then you must believe that there are nations out there under the control of some seriously deranged and suicidal people; the kind of people who care less than nothing for their families, friends or nation and who are so stupid they think attacking us would accomplish some aim of theirs. If you suggest that some radical group wants such weapons to use against us, then maybe I could go along with that. But who would provide such weapons to them, and for what purpose? And please don't say that some middle eastern nation would do so. No one wants the local crazies armed with nuclear weapons. And always remember that when we discuss this issue in the third world we're talking about 1940s technology and a primitive delivery system, at best. Face it, the best use of such a weapon in the hands of a middle eastern nation is for self-defense deterrence, and that's hard to argue against especially with Bush overstating the "axis of evil" nonsense that tries to equate the threat with the Germany/Italy WW11 threat. Finally, with regard to your statement that; "Military spending will decrease. Will we be without arms - of course not. Will we have far fewer - me thinks so." Do you really believe that we couldn't cut military spending drastically and maintain the same bang with fewer bucks? If you do then you must have a poor understanding of military spending waste and pork. The sad fact is that until you cut spending and force the military to prioritize projects you'll continue to have them spending other people's money like the drunken sailor's, marine and army men they sometimes are. Or maybe you like "star wars" defense systems that don't work now and will not work effectively in the near future, along with thousand dollar hammers. Even the lowliest enlisted men could tell you multiple tales of extravagant waste and it won't stop until the blank checks stop coming out of our pockets. Surely a self professed "right wing" thinker concerned with tax and spend government should have figured that out? Ed
