John - Re: Intel has " has never really done any
"original" research. "

I have just returned today from a ten day vacation and haven't read the WSJ article.

But a few quick comments on your excerpts.

Intel has done it's fair share of innovation in PCs and CPUs.

They were the first to incorporate memory protection on chip in their protected mode address space (introducced on the 80286), they developed the PCI bus single handedly, they developed the AGP port (with a little help from their friends), which will debut early next year, they introduced superscalar processing with the i960 architecture, they were the first to incorporate an FPU integrated with the integer CPU (i486), ditto L1 cache (i486).

Basically, the article you described sounds like someone was writing from hearsay rather than direct knowledge of Intel and its products and accomplishments.
