that is not true.. if you have a relationship with your doctor and others in the profession you will be told who is best in the business. also peers rate the doctors each year in local mag.. it may a popularity contest but it is a start.

when my wife needed brain surgery i check several sources all came up with the same recommendation. he was in a different hospital.. at the time penn,, not un of penn. when i talked with him and asked for another reference he would only recommend one other doctor in the country for the operation one that headed up the unit at mass gen hosp... i flew her up there for a second opinion.

same when i needed minor surgery for hernia.. i wanted lapo and it was brand new back then. got a dr who work perform numerous one while at mgh now back in philly. he was young and doing a lot of surgery. in fact later i sent him a few other guys.

i expect you also know who is a leader in the field if you follow some medical stocks.. like isrg. and davinci robot. i know exactly who i am going to if in need heart by pass and not get my chest cracked open.
