Pat,

I trade a lot of options as well as stock, and if I'm long and the options are in the money, I'll typically excercise and then sell the stock during the next week for a higher gain (hopefully). If my options are not in the money, I typically just let them ride in the hopes of a last day surge. I would think I'm a pretty typical options investor, and if others are doing the same there will always be lots of open contracts up to the last day.
