It is strange, but a great buying opportunity, it seems. (Unless there's some big bad news I don't know about.)

This from today's WSJ Interactive Edition (were people disappointed that the news wasn't good enough??):

N. Amer Chip Equip Indus -2: 3-Mos. Avg. Bookings Rose 125%
Dow Jones Newswires

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. -- The North American semiconductor industry posted a September book-to-bill ratio of 1.07, as reported by Semiconductor Equipment & Materials International, an industry trade association.

A book-to-bill of 1.07 means $107 in semiconductor equipment orders were received for each $100 worth of products shipped.

Three-month average shipments rose 46% in September to $1.6 billion from a year ago. The shipments were 6% above August 1997 levels.

Three-month average bookings rose to $1.75 billion, a 125% increase from a year ago. Bookings were up 4% from August 1997.

The trade association said orders have climbed about 5% a month for the last eight months.

An analyst for the group said there are "price pressures in the semiconductor business, especially in DRAMs, and manufacturers are upgrading their processes at a rapid pace in order to remain profitable."
