Finally, there is an issue of personal quality. When something goes wrong in the Obama Crusade, Obama normally attributes it to staff problems. History, if he becomes president, will read his blunders differently.

This hits the nail on the head. Both Kerry and Obama pass the blame when something go wrong. It's a sure route for making yourself smaller in public estimation. I'm not sure how the mechanism works as the press almost uniformly fails to take note of it, but it worked for Kerry and I do believe it's working for Obama too.
