I said that I don't doubt the veracity of his story. But like I said before, he said nothing new. What makes this so important is WHO is saying this, not WHAT is being said, so yeah, the motivations of the messenger are indeed fair game.

That's a big part of his point. If you step back the Bush team (echoing) rebuttal is about 85% about McClellan's veracity, not his substance. (Then they nitpick a few substance points). Same as they did in the Plume deal, a perfectly organized, 100% on message attack on the messenger. It's a great distraction, and allows anyone with the inclination to give the admin the benefit of the doubt (a majority still want to believe their President) the ability to say "Yeah, but..." and pretty much dismiss the reality as "a matter of opinion".

So my point is....

Never mind, let's just say their tactics are working again. Trying to blame this admin for anything is like trying to nail Jello to a wall. In the end it's probably not important what McClellan's said; that's all about why they were soooo bad. The important part is their complete record, and that is dismal. No amount of spin will over-ride that reality.
