Many of our immigrant families had 10 or more children....birth control was unknown, but most importantly, their farm lands needed workers....families were the workers. Plus many women died in childbirth, and of course, children died of many things on their way to adulthood...there were no medicines of any sort except herbs and combos of them.

Watching John Adams on HBO brought our attention to the horrors of smallpox, and also to the worse horrors of various cancers....they portrayed breast cancer, and there was no other remedy other than to cut it off, with no antiseptic. His daughter lived for awhile after the "operation" but did die of the disease.
