Nevertheless, you are right. Most Americans, myself included, expected the war to be a lot shorter and a lot less costly than it turned out to be.

And one reason why you thought that is because that's the way the WH sold it to the American public. For an example, Rumsfeld said the war may last "six days, six weeks but no longer than six months". People though it would be like the Gulf War.
