And Afghanistan.

But that's wasn't just because of the way the White House sold it to the public. It seemed reasonable at the time. Afghanistan was supposed to be a quagmire; the Taliban was bragging that their morale was high just a week before Kabul fell. Desert Shield was supposed to be a quagmire, but when it turned into Desert Storm, the success surprised just about everyone.

I guess the quagmire gods finally found a home in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

By the way, the WMD angle never was compelling to me despite what the Bush administration said. Instead, I believed in democratizing Iraq. Nothing wrong with that belief, except that it cost a lot more than I ever imagined. How come Afghanistan was a cakewalk by comparison?
