Bob, first, even supporters of ANWR admit that it would take between 10 and 20 years before any oil from there would be commercially available to consumers. And even after it starts flowing, it isn't that big a field. Of course, what would likely happen is that, once the nationally owned lands are opened, oil people will then press to open more. And more. And keep on drilling wherever they think there is a field.

But even more important than the above, the difference between us is that you think we can and should "drill" our way out of this problem. But we don't agree on the full dimension of the problem to begin with. I think fossil fuels themselves are the problem. And you don't. You think shortages of fossil fuels are the problem. We are going to have to agree to disagree on this, because I don't expect you to read any of the books I've suggested in the past, and don't expect you to change your mind about what I regard to be a fundamental fact.
