Hmm. Positive reinforcement doesn't work. Only severe shocks to the system seem to galvanize people to action.

You can tell people that high cholesterol leads to heart attacks and show them scientific proof of the correlation. Some people won't believe you, saying that it's just an old wive's tale. Others will believe you, but won't do anything about it. Both will only change when they have a heart attack. Some won't change even then.

That's a bit harsh.......there are many of us, me included, who eat healthy and live healthy without having suffered a heart attack.

Same thing goes for our problem with oil dependency. Some claim it's not a problem. Others agree that it is, but think the solution is to drill more, despite all the evidence that we can't drill our way out of the problem. Most won't do anything until oil prices continue to march higher for another decade.

When CA had a drought a few years back, conservation became mandatory in some parts of the state. All through the drought, the population was educated on how to use less water. As reduced levels of consumption were reached, the gov't complimented the citizens of CA. That was over ten years ago.........water consumption has never returned to the higher levels that existed prior to the drought.

This country has not been encouraged to conserve fuel as part of a national program to reduce our energy dependency. We might be surprised at how Americans react were such a program to be implemented.

Go figure. We've become a nation of morons with leaders focused on political expediency. No wonder the Clinton-McCain gas tax moratorium idea was so popular, despite the consensus among US economists that it would be a disaster.

The Bush administration has fostered an attitude of me-ism. Under an more enlightened administration, that attitude could change.
