May 30 (Bloomberg) -- China plans to build one million prefabricated homes to house displaced residents from this month's earthquake, according to Beijing Chengdong Prefabricated House Co., a bidder for the project.
The government solicited bids for 20-square meter (215- square foot) prefabricated homes that will house residents for up to five years, Tong Jihai, Chengdong's general manager, said today in an interview in Chengdu, Sichuan province.
China is struggling to shelter at least 5 million left homeless and 15 million people displaced by the May 12 earthquake, as authorities evacuate residents threatened by floods from rubble-blocked rivers. The government needs at least 3.3 million tents and requested emergency shipments of shelters from abroad to supplement domestic supplies.
Chengdong's buildings are made of uniform galvanized steel plates sandwiched around polystyrene and screwed together into buildings as tall as three stories, Tong said. They cost 420 yuan
($60) a square meter, or about 8,400 yuan for each unit.
A block of 10 structures would take 12 workers about four hours to erect, Tong said. Flexible joints and a mostly steel structure mean that the buildings shake, but do not break, during an earthquake, he said.
The deadliest earthquake in China in 32 years left more than 68,000 people dead and destroyed 4.7 million houses. Aftershocks continued to bring down more houses, destroying 420,000 earlier this week, the official Xinhua News Agency reported.
Chengdong has provided temporary housing for workers constructing the Qinghai-Tibet railway, which opened in 2006, and sites for the summer Olympic Games in Beijing in August.
