Mindmeld, > So focusing on national and economic security as the main reasons for going oil independent, what would your solutions be?

Short-term (5-10 years): Increase domestic exploration and production of oil and coal. Reduce all of the stupid red tape that makes building new nuclear power plants as expensive as building solar.

Medium-term (10-20 years): Invest in improving solar technologies. Invest in improving battery technologies. Hybrid cars are already popular; let's push for more. Also push for more mass transit.

Long-term (20-50 years): Fusion and the "hydrogen economy" is the real long-term here, but that's not going to happen without more scientists and engineers, so increase investment in education. For teachers, reward performance, not seniority. Encourage family-friendly policies and a culture where every student and their best friend studies their ass off.
